It’s important to teach children phonics because not only does each letter create a sound but so do different blends. When students learn them, it helps them read and write better.

While teaching using a textbook can provide a flow or a systematic guide, most of them are incredibly boring for students. At that point, it becomes just another lesson that they have to get through.

To build your students’ confidence and have them truly engaged in the lessons so that they want to learn and are excited for the lessons, integrate the following three steps and have fun with them.

Actionable Steps:

#1. Make the Sounds

Have your students focus on the individual phonics sounds before introducing any of them blends.

When you introduce the blend, make it fun by playing with the sounds and having your students make the sounds as well. Do them in different voices and tones so that your little ones can laugh together about it. This will permit it to memory.

#2. Focus on the Images

Teach children using pictures that relate to their life so that they can make connections, learn the terms, and remember the phonics blend quickly.

Use those same pictures to work on phonics blend activities so that students have practice writing the blends while they learn new words. Depending on where the child is at with their understanding of it, it’s best to differentiate the work for them so that they don’t get bored easily.

#3. Integrate Hands-on Application

Once your children have completed the aforementioned step, take it a step further by integrating project based learning into your curriculum so that your students apply their learning in a creative manner. It will help them see the relevance of their work while enjoying the process.
