On April 22, 2024, we celebrate Earth Day to raise aware about the importance of taking care of and protecting Earth. This is important for our students’ because climate change is really taking a toll on the environment. It is their generation that will have to deal with the consequences if we don’t teach them how to care for the environment now.
Celebrating Earth Day dates back to the 1970s. So far, it has made a positive impact on a global level with adults. However, not as many children realize that they can contribute as well. Children, especially young ones, want to help, so let’s provide them with the chance to do it.
This is also a great opportunity to participate alongside your students in making the Earth a safer place. You can do it in the following three ways.
Actionable Steps:
#1. Educate
Read books about the Earth and different ways to protect it. If at all possible, integrate Indigenous knowledge because there’s a wealth of knowledge to be learned from their perspective, their beliefs and the way they care for the environment.
#2. Give Back
Take some time to teach your students how to give back to the environment. Remind them about the importance of plants and how they’re constantly being cut down. Teach them how to to make a difference by growing their own plants that they can care for at school or at home. You can also start a little community garden with your class.
#3. Reduce and Recycle
Have your children go through their closet so that they can donate any items that they haven’t used in a while. Your students can bring them in as a way of motivating each other. You can go on a field trip to donate the items so that your students can see the difference that they’re making immediately.
You can also set up recycling bins for your students to recycle paper, soft and hard plastic, glass bottles and plastic bottles and more. Explain to them why you’re setting up recycling bins and what happens to the landfill when they’re thrown out.
