Halloween is such a fun time of year. My kids at home and my students at school excitedly wait for that one special day and can hardly contain their excitement when it arrives.

The few days to even weeks before it arrives your kids will start talking about Halloween. Around this time, you’ll need to find creative ways to engage them in learning because unless it’s related to Halloween or you’re really loud, which gets annoying and exhausting after a while, many kids will loose focus quickly.

Halloween can be controversial to some people, so if your district or school is against it, check out steps # 1 and 4 as a way to get around that and still enjoy the festivities together.

The following steps will help you spice up your lessons to engage your kids in learning. You can also use the activity sheets to decorate your classroom. Many of the activities, if worked on in small groups, will foster teamwork and collaboration.

Actionable Steps:

#1. Creepy Crawly Math

This one is super simple and delicious. Get some gummy worms from your local grocery store, give some to each child and have them practice counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. You can write questions on the board or say them out loud and have your kids practice with these gummy worms. Essentially, they’ll be using the gummy worms as manipulatives that they can eat after as a celebration.

#2. A Month of Halloween

Start celebrating Halloween from the beginning of October and keep it going until October 31st. You can do this with a fun project-based learning activity that your students will rave about. They’ll be invited to practice the writing, art, their presentation skills, and so much more. They’ll also engage in creative thinking through innovation.

#3. Play Some Games

Halloween Day doesn’t have to be a waste of a day for academics. You can still teach your students while engaging them in some fun math, writing and art activities. It may sound impossible but it’s not.

Download the following Fun Halloween Activities package, print them out, hand them to your students at different times of the day when you feel like your kids are no longer paying attention to your lesson and need a quick break, and work on it with them. Once you’ve completed an activity, get back to your curriculum and then work on another activity when needed. I like going back and forth with these activities as it keeps my students focused.

#4. Fall in Love with Fall

Not all schools are okay with celebrating Halloween for various reasons. If you’re in a school like this and your kids are really excited about it because they’re going to go trick o’ treating after school, you’ll still need a way to engage them in learning.

Download this Fall/Autumn Elementary Bundle to teach your children fun autumn terms and play games together. You can use the sheets to decorate your classroom so that it fills the space with autumn joy.
