It’s natural to reflect and rest at the end of the year. Whether you’re a teacher or a parent, we all need a fresh start in January. We need to find the space to reflect on ourselves as teachers, parents AND as individuals.
We’re not making any changes this week.
The challenge here is that as the year progresses and real-life gets in the way, it’s hard to keep track of our goals and make them stick.
So today, we’re going to start slow and build up so that you can achieve more than you’ve done in the past.
We’re going to start by resetting before the New Year. With small and consistent steps, we’ll start the year off strong.
If you’d like ready-to-use activities to help your kids as well, explore my New Year’s Goal Setting Resources for templates, prompts, and reflection tools. In the meantime, let’s get started with the following actionable steps.
Actionable Steps:
#1. What’s Working
Before creating any new goals or making changes, reflect on your current routines. Think about the following questions:
- What goals did you achieve?
- Did you create any new habits? If so, which ones worked and which ones didn’t work?
- Which goals did you want to achieve but weren’t able to do so?
#2. Build Momentum
Creating new goals without a way to follow-though is one of the biggest mistakes. Instead, focus on creating habits first.
- Create one new habit, like drinking more water.
- Keep it clear and specific.
- What are small wins for you and how will you celebrate them?
#3. Create Visuals
In order to make sure your new habit sticks, create visual reminders so that you can stay on track.
- Post visual reminders of your habits in a place that you can see them, like on your bathroom mirror. At school, post up visual reminders on your white board for your children or in your dayplan for yourself.
- Decide on a reward for achieving your habit as it will motivate you to accomplish more.
