3 Simple Ways to Host Thanksgiving on a Budget

Planning and hosting a Thanksgiving dinner can be incredibly stressful. You’ve got to deal with the food, entertainment and decorations.

Whether you have a big family or not, you don’t need to go over budget because this is only the start of the festive season. There’s more to come and you really don’t want to go broke by the time this season ends.

As much as I love Thanksgiving, it’s not cheap and there’s so much to do, like baking multiple pies, cooking a large turkey with a side of ham, and about ten side dishes along with drinks and snacks.

As excited as I am for this holiday, I’m not a fan of overspending. Therefore, I’ve outlined three steps that I take to stay on track financially. They’re simple and absolutely manageable.

Actionable Steps:

#1. Create Your Budget

Plan your menu first. Then create a budget for how much money you are willing to spend on food, drinks and decor. Writing down your budget will allow you to keep track of what you’re spending so that you don’t go over your budget and stress out about it later on. Remember that Christmas and the New Year is around the corner so you don’t want to overdo it with this holiday.

If you’re looking to save money, let go for the entertainment section and either allow people to chat or turn on your television or radio.

You can also DIY your own decor. For example, you can use objects you see in real life, like colorful leaves, pine cones and rocks to create a beautiful center piece.

#2. Shop Ahead of Time

I’m sure there are a lot of fancy grocery stores but you don’t need to go to them if you’re trying to stay on a small budget. Go to one that has generic brands so that you can purchase more for less money.

Nowadays a lot of grocery stores post their specials and coupons online. Start looking ahead of time so that you can take advantage of them. Remember, you don’t have to make everything from scratch so you don’t need fresh items for every meal. You can get some canned items. You can prep them in advance, add your own spin to it and hide the cans. None will be the wiser.

#3. Include a Potluck Component

You can either have the whole meal as a potluck and organize who is bringing which items, or you can ask your guests to bring side dishes, desert and drinks. This way, you only have to focus on creating the main dishes.
