It’s almost Black Friday. For many people, this is an exciting time of the year. Retailers place so much of hype around it that it almost feels like a special occasion or a holiday. Considering how close it is to Thanksgiving and Christmas, many people tend to treat it like a day to be celebrated.

If you’ve been to a mall, you’ve probably seen the long line-ups outside each store and noted how some people wake up extra early or camp outside the store the night before to purchase items. While I can admire their dedication, many people tend to go overboard with their spending and later complain that they have no money.

If you have kids, this can be even harder as they WILL mostly likely make their wants known and heard.

Considering how many people are in debt and how stressful it is for them and their families, this article will outline three simple ways to save money on Black Friday. Note that even though I’ve written the word “simple,” I didn’t write that it would be easy. There’s work to be done but have some fun with it because it’s going to be worth your time and effort.

Actionable Steps:

#1. Create Your List

Figure out what you need in advance and write it down. Answer the following questions:

  1. Are there any birthdays coming up?
  2. Do you need to purchase gifts for holidays like Christmas and New Year?
  3. Who do you need to buy gifts for?
  4. What do you need for yourself or your household?
  5. What are your wants?

Be as specific as possible. Don’t write paragraphs. You only need short bullet points.

#2. Figure Out Your Budget

What can you spend on shopping during the Black Friday event overall. Write that number down.

If you’re going to the mall to shop, go the bank and take out the money you need to make purchases. Do not use your credit card unless you can have blinders on when you go to the mall because there’s too much of hype around Black Friday and it can be hard to resist it.

If you’re shopping online, which I highly recommend doing, go ahead and use your credit card as long as you pair it up with step #3.

#3. Do Your Research

Based on the items you wrote down in step #1, go online and look at which items are on sale. Compare the prices to other stores so that you can find the best value for what you need. Make a note of the store name, location and the price.

Once you’ve done this for every single item that you want or need to purchase, add up the prices. If you are over budget, you’ll need to start cutting down on your wants column and differ it to another time. You may think you’re getting a deal now but going into debt for a want is never a good idea. You aren’t actually getting a good deal. You’re being swept up in the moment of the Black Friday event.

If you can purchase your items online, you’ll be in better shape because once you find the store with a good deal, you can add the items to your basket right away or save the link so that you can go immediately to it once the Black Friday sale starts. This way, you won’t feel the need to look at every other item.
