Can you imagine walking into your classroom with nothing ready? If you don’t have a plan, you won’t have any of the sheets that you need and will have to search for them in the moment. Instead of enjoying lunch or recess, you’ll need to spend your time searching for your documents and photocopying them. Worse yet, you’ll need to bother the receptionist with this task when they already have so much to do.
Now imagine your classroom. Not knowing what you’re doing will cause avoidable disruption for your students. If you’re unsure, they’ll feel that uncertainty, which will cause unnecessary behavior problems.
Instead, plan in advance, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed and have control of your day. If you plan effectively, the years following will be easier. It means that you’ll have a chance of enjoying your time with your students and your time after school.
If you’re looking for a teacher planner to stay organized, check out the following resource.
The following strategies will help you plan ahead so that you’re ready to go. Keep in mind that there’s going to be more time and work upfront but it will ease up in time.
Actionable Steps:
#1. Objectives
Figure out what the big idea is that you want to teach your children. You can find the information for this on your government site. It may be termed as “Big Idea,” “Common Core, ” or “Core Competency.”
This is important because it can serve as your guiding force and it can be something you post on your board so that your students know what they’ll be learning. You can also use this in your report cards.
#2. Content
Based on the objectives, focus on what content best fits with it and outline your lesson based on this. Then look at the activities that would match with it, engage your children and enable them to learn the concepts. The activities don’t have to be complicated. They have to be interesting to your students.
#3. Materials
What materials do you need to ensure that this lesson is successful? Make a note of them and get all of the equipment ready in advance. If you need worksheets, photocopy all of them.
#4. Assessment
You’ll need to know how to do the following:
- Assess your students’ prior knowledge- what they already know.
- Assess your students’ ongoing learning development.
- Assess your students’ summative assessment.
