Setting goals at the end of the current year or at the beginning of the new year can be incredibly exciting. Many of us get swept up in the moment because everyone else is doing it and talking about setting New Year’s goals and intentions.
Mind you, this is a great way to start off the new year because it will motivate you to want more for yourself and to see that good things are possible for you.
The problem is that many people create them with the intention of following through and fulfilling their dreams. However, few people ever make much progress and then get upset at the end of the year.
This year, will be different. Let’s create goals and intentions that we will accomplish. You may not get through all of them but YOU WILL get through at least one of them and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Let’s approach this with an open and a growth mindset because it is possible for you. We’re going to do this together with the following four steps.
Actionable Steps:
#1. Reflect
Take a moment to reflect on this past year and answer the following questions.
- What went well for you?
- Which goals did you accomplish?
- Which goals didn’t you get to? Why?
- How do you feel about yourself?
- Where do you want to be in a year?
#2. Focus on the Why
Write down your goals for this year.
Write down everything that’s on your heart and in your mind. Don’t worry about if it’s realistic or not. Just get everything down on paper.
Beside each of them, write down your “WHY” – why do you want want to accomplish your goals. This is important when you have a difficult time accomplishing your goals, your “why” will propel you forward if it’s strong enough. If you don’t have a compelling enough reason for a goal, that might be one you work on at a later time.
#3. Choose Your Goal
Choose one goal with a strong “why” that you are excited to start working on. Start with only one goal so that will allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment before you move on to the next one. If you juggle too many goals, you may never complete any of them.
#4. Be Methodical
Be methodical and plan accordingly. Break down your goals into manageable bits so that you have the greatest chance of success.
