Do you have a child who constantly sees the negative in everything, including positive situations?

Does this make others not like your child or turn away from them?

Does this make them even more miserable?

Do they complain about everything?

Does it upset you and your family?

Don’t worry! This isn’t the end of the road for you. You can help your child change their outlook but it will take time and energy on your part. The following steps will serve as a guide for you if you’re ready to deal with your child’s negative attitude.

Actionable Steps:

#1. Changing the Perspective

When your child starts to talk about all of the bad things in their life, wait until they’ve finished voicing their thoughts. When they are done, talk to them about how much you love them.

Teach your children how to see the the good in their life so that they aren’t always sulking in negative energy. Overtime, this will help them change their state of mind.

#2. Understand Emotions

Help your child understand why they have these negative feelings. Don’t let them think that there is something wrong with them or that they are the problem. Teach them that they have control over their thoughts and that they can overcome their negative feelings by doing the following:

  1. Feeling their big emotions.
  2. Figuring out what’s causing them to feel that way.
  3. Understanding if the size of the problem really matches the size of their feelings.
  4. Focusing on regulating their emotions with the resources below.
#3. Set Clear Boundaries

Teach your children about what behavior is acceptable in different situations. For example, is it appropriate to bring everyone down with negativity at a birthday party or at a family dinner? If your child does exhibit negative behavior, what are the consequences? Make sure to discuss this ahead of time so that your child understands the expectations.

Before you go out remind your children how to self-regulate as mentioned in step #2.
