I know! I know! It’s so close to Spring Break. You may already have mentally checked out, but I’m asking you to hang on just a little longer so that you don’t have to take work home during the break or worse yet, struggle to plan when you get back from the break. You’ll have your hands full with marking, report cards, and off-task behavior as the sun comes out and summer approaches.
If you start now, it will make the last few months of school more manageable because we all know that is when most teachers start to feel exhausted and burnout. I don’t want that for you, so let’s see how we can make this more manageable for you with the following steps.
Actionable Steps:
#1. Plan Ahead
Plan for your first week back after the Spring Break so that you can focus on classroom management and getting into the groove of teaching again. It’s difficult coming back from a long break because you and your students will still be in vacation mode. Your students won’t be in the mood to study and you’ll have your hands full with trying to get your students to focus again.
Before you leave for Spring Break, have your first week planned and the material for your first day back photocopied. If you’re unsure about how to get it all done or where to focus your time and energy, I encourage you to check out the following: FREE MASTERCLASS: Systematic Plan to Super Passionate.
#2. Take Inventory
Look at what’s broken in your class and in need of replacing. You can either shop for it now, on your break, or after.
Check on your reading books in class to see if everything is in order or if anything is missing.
Look at your manipulatives and see if they have been organized properly. Are they in the correct bins or bags?
#3. Complete Your Marking
Make sure that if you have any marking left, do it now. If it’s possible, pair your students up and have them mark each other’s work. You can then go over it to make sure everything’s in order. This will free up your time to mark essays or long form answers.
